A Black man experiencing urinary urgency, illustrating symptoms associated with nocturia, enlarged prostate (BPH), overactive bladder, and other conditions that may cause men to wake up multiple times during the night to urinate.

The number of men waking up multiple times at night to urinate is becoming increasingly common and its becoming a thing of concern.

How many times did you (or the man in your life) use the bathroom between last night and this morning?

What was the explanation?

"It's normal… I'm just getting older."

That’s what many men tell themselves.

Until waking up 2, 3, or even 4 times every night to urinate becomes their new normal.

Until using the restroom starts taking longer.

Until the urine flow becomes weaker.

Until the discomfort becomes harder to ignore.

But here’s the question many men are asking silently and most times they are searching online:

“Why do men urinate frequently at night?”

The answer isn't always simple.

Sometimes, frequent urination at night may be linked to hydration habits, medications, diabetes, infections, or age-related changes.

But in some cases, it can point to underlying prostate health issues, including prostate enlargement (BPH) or, in certain situations, prostate cancer.

Frequent Urination in Men: When Should You Be Concerned?

Needing to urinate more often doesn’t automatically mean something serious.

However, certain symptoms deserve medical attention.

Watch out for:

·       Frequent urination, especially at night

·       Difficulty starting urination

·       Weak urine stream

·       Feeling like your bladder never fully empties

·       Blood in urine

·       Pain or discomfort during urination

These symptoms do not automatically mean cancer.

But they may be your body’s way of saying:

“Please pay attention.”

The Health Conversation Many Men Keep Postponing

Many men will service their car before they schedule a medical checkup.

Many will ignore symptoms for months.

Some, for years.

Not because they don’t care.

Because life is busy.

Because “I’ll be fine.”

Because nobody really taught them to prioritize their health.

But delaying health checks can come at a cost.

Why Prostate Health Matters

The prostate is a small gland with a major role in men’s health.

As men age, prostate-related conditions become more common.

That’s why understanding prostate cancer symptoms, prostate enlargement symptoms, and the importance of routine health screening matters.

Early detection can improve outcomes.

Not fear.

Not silence.

Not assumptions.

Awareness. Action. Checkups.

Your Body Talks. Don’t Ignore the Signs.

If frequent urination, weak urine flow, or urinary discomfort has become your “new normal,” it may be time to speak with a healthcare professional.

At The HOW Foundation, we believe awareness and conversations can save lives.

Taking your health seriously is not weakness.

It is responsibility.

To yourself.

To your family.

To your future.

Because being strong should also mean taking care of your health.

It’s Time to Normalize Men’s Screening Conversations

Beyond awareness, there is a stronger call we must begin to normalize:

Early screening and knowing your PSA number.

The PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test is a simple but powerful blood test that helps assess prostate health and detect risks early.

Men are encouraged to go for regular screening and understand their PSA levels, especially from age 40 and above, or earlier if there is family history.

But beyond medical checkups, we must also change culture.

It should no longer be unusual to ask:

“What’s your PSA?”

Just like we ask:

“Good morning, how are you?”

We should begin to normalize conversations that protect life, not just lifestyle.

Because if we truly value the men who protect families, communities, and nations…

Then we must also protect them.

It’s time to protect those protecting us.
